WhatsApp ordered in India to rewrite data-sharing rules with mandatory opt-in

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal stressed that Meta "cannot assert unilateral or open-ended rights over user data," eliminating the old "take-it-or-leave-it" policy. It has given WhatsApp a three-month deadline to implement the Competition Commission of India’s remedial safeguards, aimed at ensuring user consent, transparency and control over any data shared with its parent company, Meta.WhatsApp’s privacy interface will undergo a sweeping overhaul in the next three months after an Indian appellate court ruled that any transfer of Indian user data to Meta Platforms or its group entities must be based exclusively on “lawful, user-approved uses.”...
