Coupang pressed by South Korea privacy regulator to fix disclaimer, simplify exits

The Personal Information Protection Commission, which is still investigating the breach, said a clause that seeks to exempt Coupang from liability for damages caused by illegal third-party access to its servers may conflict with liability and burden-of-proof rules under privacy law. It also found that Coupang’s current design makes withdrawal procedures more difficult than signing up, and called on the company to streamline the process and clearly disclose it so users can easily exercise their rights. While acknowledging that the company has corrected some breach notices and added missing items, the regulator called on it to further improve notifications and secondary-harm prevention measures, including for non-members whose data were exposed. It also asked Coupang to strengthen its monitoring and response system and to report within seven days on the measures taken.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
