South Korea's privacy regulator opens digital forensic center

( December 10, 2025, 07:53 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator has opened its first digital forensic center, located within the Seoul government complex, to collect, analyze, manage and preserve digital evidence related to data breaches, particularly those caused by hacking. The Personal Information Protection Commission said the center was established with a budget of 1.6 billion won ($1 million) and is equipped with dedicated forensic tools. By applying standardized procedures for handling digital evidence, the center is expected to strengthen the agency’s ability to investigate large-scale data breaches while ensuring evidence integrity and more reliable investigation outcomes. The PIPC reported a sharp rise in data breaches this year, with cases increasing 30 percent to 396 as of November. Hacking accounted for 64 percent of all reported incidents.
