End of Telegram penalty appeal is welcomed by Australia's online-safety enforcer

( November 20, 2025, 04:35 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Telegram has withdrawn its court appeal against a A$967,000 ($626,000 today) penalty imposed by Australia’s online-safety watchdog over the instant-messaging service’s alleged failure to respond to a transparency-reporting notice demand within the required reporting period. In a statement published on Thursday, the eSafety Commissioner welcomed the end of the appeal in the Federal Court of Australia but didn’t reveal the reasons for the tech company’s decision to discontinue the appeal. The commissioner’s reporting notice had sought critical information about steps Telegram had taken to address terrorist and violent extremist, as well as child sexual-exploitation material on the platform.
