South Korean privacy regulator launches taskforce to prevent repeat data breaches

( October 13, 2025, 06:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator will launch a taskforce to strengthen responses to data breaches and prevent their recurrence, following a series of large-scale data breaches involving SK Telecom, Lotte Card and KT. The taskforce, comprising experts from the public and private sectors, will consider introducing punitive penalties and potential criminal penalties for the illegal distribution of personal data, the Personal Information Protection Commission said. It will also review possible incentives to encourage proactive data protection and explore the creation of a special fund to compensate victims.
