PIPC announces privacy safeguards to prevent large-scale data breaches

( September 11, 2025, 04:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator announced on Thursday new initiatives aimed at preventing large-scale data breaches. Developed in the wake of SK Telecom’s data breaches, the measures will introduce heavier fines for repeat offences and incentives for companies that make significant efforts to strengthen privacy safeguards. The regulator will gradually require companies to allocate more than 10 percent of their IT budgets to data protection by 2028. The PIPC is preparing amendments to the privacy law to incorporate these initiatives and plans to submit them to the National Assembly next year. The statement, in Korean, is attached....
