Google lawyer, plaintiff expert spar over privacy controls as high-stakes US trial continues

By Mike Swift ( August 21, 2025, 23:51 GMT | Insight) -- The plaintiffs' first expert witness took the stand today in the landmark privacy trial against Google in which the plaintiffs are seeking nearly $30 billion in damages, with expert Jonathan Hochman saying the digital ads giant's disclosures are "vague" and misleading. Hochman testified that one of Google's key privacy settings, Web & App Activity, makes little difference in what data Google collects and uses from each consumer, although the plaintiffs' expert was forced to walk back some statements during a lengthy cross-examination that took up much of the day.As a multi-billion-dollar privacy trial against Google continued today, a plaintiff expert walked the jury through the mass of data Google collects, no matter how users configure their privacy settings, saying if converted to paper it would reach three times to the sun....
