UK online safety law is ‘censoring speech,’ US human rights review argues

( August 13, 2025, 10:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Department of State has sharply criticized the UK over what it sees as setbacks in human rights and privacy, claiming that the UK Online Safety Act grants regulator Ofcom broad powers over US tech firms’ content-moderation practices. The report argued that one effect of the act’s implementation could be to “reduce or eliminate effective encryption (and therefore user privacy).” The document also mentioned the UK government’s response to the 2024 killings in Southport as an example of the law’s impact. The findings appear in the Department’s annual global human rights review, which this year has drawn criticism for being politically influenced.Statement follows. Report attached....
