Judge questions Meta bid to dodge 'pen register' claim in US tax privacy case

By Maria Dinzeo ( July 31, 2025, 21:11 GMT | Insight) -- A US federal judge pressed Meta Platforms today over its attempt to dismiss a California Invasion of Privacy Act claim for unauthorized use of a pen register stemming from its use of pixel tracking technology on tax-filing websites, questioning whether the company was exploiting a loophole in the statute by arguing that its pixel collects the content of  a communication, putting it beyond the reach of the pen register statute.A US federal judge grilled a lawyer for Meta Platforms today over the company’s attempt to dodge claims that its tracking pixel functions as an unauthorized recording device — or “pen register” — in violation of the California Invasion of Privacy Act....
