Profiling tools in online safety must balance privacy risks, UK guidance says

( July 30, 2025, 10:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Profiling tools can help detect harmful content and meet obligations established by the UK Online Safety Act, but privacy must also be taken into consideration when such tools are used for online safety purposes, the Information Commissioner’s Office said in new guidance issued today. The UK regulator clarified how data protection law and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations still apply to profiling tools used in trust and safety systems. The new guidance is part of a commitment by the ICO and media watchdog Ofcom to ensure regulatory coherence between the data protection and online safety regimes.Statement follows.
