KakaoTalk, Naver among South Korean super apps asked to tighten data handling

( July 24, 2025, 07:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: KakaoTalk, Naver, Coupang, Baedal Minjok and Danggeun Market were subject to a preemptive inspection by South Korea’s privacy regulator over how they manage personal data across interconnected services. The Personal Information Protection Commission found that these “super apps” often share user data via APIs and data warehouses without adequate oversight, and recommended that such decisions be made under the supervision of privacy departments, with access logs for data warehouses retained and reviewed for two years. It also recommended cutting unnecessary consent prompts, clearly informing users of essential data uses and obtaining consent only when legally required. To strengthen user control, the commission called for clearer service listings, individual service withdrawal options and easy-to-follow procedures for data deletion or suspension.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
