South Korean regulator holds cloud-privacy roundtable with major providers

( July 16, 2025, 06:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: To improve the effectiveness of oversight in cloud-based personal data processing, South Korea’s privacy regulator proposed that major cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Naver Cloud, can help client businesses meet legal-supervision requirements by clearly stating in contracts that they do not access user data and by undergoing regular audits by certified third-party security organizations, with results disclosed to users. While data controllers are obligated to monitor how processors handle personal information, the Personal Information Protection Commission acknowledged at a roundtable that it is often unrealistic for individual businesses to directly supervise large-scale providers. The July 16 meeting was convened to follow up on a June enforcement decision, bringing together the cloud providers to share current and planned privacy safeguards and explore practical, cloud-specific approaches to ensuring privacy protection.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
