Platforms face UK push for researcher data access, but US tensions could intrude

But industry resistance, international tensions — particularly with the US — and the lack of a binding framework could undermine the plans. Ofcom has urged the government to choose a hybrid model, but ministers might be cautious about imposing new obligations on US platforms. Social media, messaging and search platforms may soon face new legal duties in the UK to share data with researchers studying online safety under proposals unveiled this week. But how onerous the government will choose to make those duties — particularly when they affect US-based Big Tech companies — is a big unknown....
