Ireland Department of Social Protection fined over biometric data processing

( June 12, 2025, 13:46 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Ireland’s Department of Social Protection has been fined 550,000 euros ($638,204) by the country's data watchdog over its collection of biometric data. The Data Protection Commission also ordered the government department to stop processing biometric data linked to the Public Services Card unless a lawful basis was identified within nine months. The DPC said the department had breached multiple provisions of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, including unlawful collection and retention of biometric data, inadequate transparency, and shortcomings in its data protection impact assessment.
