Two universities in South Korea hit with fines for personal-data leaks

( June 12, 2025, 08:46 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Two universities in South Korea — Jeonbuk National University and Ewha Womans University —have been fined a combined 966 million won (about $711,000) and issued corrective orders for leaking hundreds of thousands of personal records due to lax security practices. The Personal Information Protection Commission said both schools failed to detect and block unauthorized access during nights and weekends, allowing hackers to exploit long-standing system vulnerabilities to steal resident registration numbers and other personal data. Jeonbuk National University was fined 623 million won for a breach affecting about 320,000 people, while Ewha Womans University received a 343 million won fine over a breach impacting over 83,000 people. The regulator urged the education ministry to strengthen oversight of university data systems and consider reflecting privacy safeguards in institutional evaluations.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
