PIPC to assess smart devices for privacy-by-design certification

( June 10, 2025, 04:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator will conduct privacy assessments of home cameras, in-vehicle video recorders, domestic robots and robot vacuum cleaners this year as part of its privacy-by-design certification program. The Personal Information Protection Commission will offer one-on-one consultations to manufacturers that applied for the certification and evaluate whether their products meet privacy requirements in areas such as data processing, information security, privacy-enhancing technologies and organizational safeguards. The PIPC said four major manufacturers — whose names were withheld until the final announcement in December — have applied and will undergo assessments. Previously, SK Shieldus received the certification for its home CCTV system in 2023, while Samsung Electronics was certified for its robot vacuum cleaner in 2024.
