Data breach notifications continue to rise in Japan, regulator says

( June 10, 2025, 09:09 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: More than 21,000 data breaches were reported in Japan in the year to March, a 58 percent increase compared with the previous year, the annual report by the Personal Information Protection Commission said. Approved today by the Cabinet, the report reveals errors in issuing and sending medical documents at pharmacies and hospitals remain high, followed by cases of unauthorized access in private and public sectors. One cyberattack against an operator of social security and human resource systems resulted in 2,700 data breaches. The PPC’s private sector enforcements included one corrective recommendation and guidance in 395 cases. The regulator is also reviewing the Act on the Protection of Personal Information, said the report, which is set to be submitted to parliament. The statement, in Japanese, is attached....
