South Korean regulator holds first privacy dialogue with China

( May 28, 2025, 08:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator said it has held its first dialogue with China’s Cyberspace Administration to strengthen cooperation on cross-border data protection. The Personal Information Protection Commission Vice Chairman Choi Jang-hyuk met with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing today and urged authorities to help ensure that Chinese Internet firms adequately safeguard the personal data of South Korean citizens. The regulator said Choi also outlined South Korea’s approach to emerging privacy risks posed by AI and digital transformation, and proposed establishing a multinational data protection council involving China and other key partners to improve the interoperability of cross-border data transfer systems and address public concerns about personal data handling.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
