Major platforms penalized as China escalates crackdown on 'unboxing'

( May 27, 2025, 05:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s Internet regulator has penalized three major website platforms, who were not identified, while directing key sites to issue regular governance announcements, publicize exemplary cases and report suspicious activities to public security authorities, according to China’s Cyberspace Administration. The measures target the “unboxing” problem—a local term for illegally obtaining and disclosing personal information—with platforms such as Sina Weibo, Tencent, Douyin and Baidu urged to assume full responsibility for preventing the offense. Regulators plan to enhance oversight by urging platforms to block dissemination channels and upgrade protective measures, as well as by intensifying efforts to crack down on illegal personal data collection, use, disclosure, theft, trafficking and its use in criminal activities.
