Tencent can take WeChat privacy claims to arbitration, California judge says

( May 14, 2025, 21:34 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A California state judge said he would adopt his tentative ruling that Tencent America could have its dispute over privacy and censorship violations by the Chinese government through the WeChat app decided through non-public arbitration instead of by the court. Judge Theodore Zayner rejected arguments by Citizen Power Initiatives for China that the arbitration clause in WeChat's terms of service could not be enforced because the group is seeking public injunctive relief. "Because the proposed injunctions themselves are defined in somewhat subjective and uncertain terms, it is difficult for the court to say with certainty whether in practical effect they would have primary purpose or effect of redressing or preventing injury to the Plaintiffs or to the general public," Zayner wrote.See attached document....
