US Senators reintroduce Kids Online Safety Act with backing from Apple

( May 14, 2025, 16:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US Senators Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, and Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, along with US Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, and US. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, are reintroducing the Kids Online Safety Act, a bill that would require online platforms to mitigate harm to minors. The bill contains much of the same language as last session's effort, but with changes to make clear that it "would not censor, limit, or remove any content from the internet." The bill enjoys support from Apple this time around. Timothy Powderly, senior director of Government Affairs for the Americas, sent a letter to Blackburn and Blumenthal saying the company hopes the bill marks "the first steps towards comprehensive privacy legislation that ensures everyone’s right to privacy online."Press release below.
