South Korea's SK Telecom apologizes for data breach, admits missing reporting deadline

( April 30, 2025, 06:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, apologized during a parliamentary hearing today for the data breach affecting customer USIM card data, acknowledging the company detected the initial hack on April 18 but missed the legal reporting deadline. He said that a subsequent data leak discovered on April 19 was reported within the required timeframes as part of their customer-protection efforts. Ryu detailed the company's security response, including a network-based Fraud Detection System to block illegal SIM cloning attempts, a free USIM Protection Service already protecting over 10 million users and complimentary USIM replacements.
