Japan, UK agree to expanded data-flow deal by early 2026

( April 25, 2025, 07:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The data-protection regulators of Japan and the UK have agreed to expand cross-border data flows between the two nations through mutual adequacy findings of data protection. This builds on a 2021 legal amendment in Japan that enables the extension of the scope of adequacy arrangements with the UK beyond the private sector to include academia and the public sector. In a  joint statement published after their meeting in London on Wednesday, Commissioner Shuhei Ohshima of Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission and Chris Bryant, the UK minister of state for data protection and telecoms, said they agreed to “accelerate the work with a view to delivering the expanded framework by spring 2026,” which means around March to May next year.  The statement is attached....
