Japan to launch cybersecurity-evaluation system to bolster supply-chain security

( April 15, 2025, 06:49 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: To address the rising number of cyberattacks on smaller suppliers that could disrupt entire supply chains, Japan's industry ministry and cybersecurity regulator plan to introduce a security-evaluation system. Suppliers will be classified into three categories: basic, standard and high. Each category will be required to adopt security measures appropriate to their level. Basic-level suppliers can conduct self-evaluations to handle common cyber threats, while mid-level suppliers, whose vulnerabilities could disrupt supply chains, must undergo third-party evaluations. High-level suppliers, including those in the automotive and semiconductor industries, will face the most stringent requirements. According to an interim report by the industry ministry and the National Center for Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity, the basic and standard levels will be introduced in the fiscal year starting April next year.
