Indonesia requires e-SIM migration, biometric registration to boost digital security

( April 14, 2025, 08:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Indonesia's Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs has issued a new regulation requiring the migration of mobile phone SIM cards to electronic versions, or e-SIMs, with biometric registration. The move is aimed at enhancing digital security, preventing fraud and cybercrime and strengthening data protection, the ministry said in a statement. Telecom providers have been given two years to fully implement the policy. Under the new policy, only a limited number of mobile numbers can be registered to one Indonesian ID number, referred to as NIK. Under the current system, one NIK can be used to register unlimited phone numbers, which results in the misuse of the phone numbers for online gambling and cybercrimes. The statements follow and the regulation is attached: ...
