US lawmakers urge FTC to investigate Meta over alleged COPPA violations

( April 10, 2025, 19:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US Senator Ed Markey and Representative Kathy Castor urged Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson to review a petition submitted by advocacy organization Fairplay alleging Meta Platforms violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act when it collected children's data for its virtual reality system Horizon Woods. In a letter, the lawmakers also cite "an accompanying sworn statement by a new Meta whistleblower further suggests that Meta intentionally ignored child users on Horizon Worlds and disregarded its obligations under COPPA.
