Japan's PPC discloses amendment package to personal-information protection law

( March 7, 2025, 02:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japanese data-protection regulator disclosed a package of possible amendments to the nation's personal-information protection law this week. The amendments suggest relaxing engagement and notification rules for data subjects in certain cases, while strengthening protections for minors, facial-recognition data and cookies. The Personal Information Protection Commission also recommended stricter regulations for data brokers, expanding the scope of criminal penalties, and enhancing enforcement through an administrative-fine system and joint consumer actions. The PPC is still considering proposing an amendment bill to the Act on the Protection of Personal Information in the current parliament session that lasts until June.
