Data Privacy & Security - KakaoPay - Apple - Alipay - Cross-border data transfers (South Korea)

KakaoPay and Apple have been hit with combined fines of 8.4 billion won (about $5.8 million) by the Personal Information Protection Commission for illegal cross-border data transfers. KakaoPay received a 6 billion won penalty for sharing 40 million users' data with Alipay for payment-default risk assessments, while Apple was fined 2.4 billion won for failing to disclose its Alipay data-processing arrangement. The regulator ordered both companies to implement proper transfer protocols and instructed Alipay to destroy all non-sufficient fund scoring models built with the unauthorized data.
