Data Privacy and Security, Technology - Regulation - Protection of minors online (EU)

For the upcoming term from 2024 to 2029, the European Commission is expected to propose measures and guidelines to make social media platforms and the online environment safer for children and minors and to protect their privacy online. The commission is currently working on guidelines for platforms to protect minors under the Digital Services Act as well as an interim solution for age verification. Issues such as addictive design, dark patterns and influencer marketing are expected to be regulated under the upcoming Digital Fairness Act. In a more general context, the new commission will also conduct an EU-wide inquiry on the impact of social media on mental health.
