Meta Platforms is facing pressure from EU and UK data protection authorities over its legal basis under the GDPR to process data to train artificial intelligence. Its lead EU data regulator, Ireland's Data Protection Commission, has asked Meta to pause its training of AI models in the EU while regulators consider whether the "legitimate interests" legal basis is appropriate, following complaints by a campaign group. The UK's Information Commissioner's Office has also asked for a pause. OpenAI and Google, the two largest AI companies, also use “legitimate interests.” X, formerly Twitter, has also paused AI training following pressure from the Irish regulator.
