Data Privacy & Security - Chatrie - United States - Google - Litigation over use of 'geofencing' (US)
Litigation over whether companies such as Google must comply with geofencing subpoenas, in which police can compel companies to provide the location data of every person within a specific geographic zone. The case was filed in the Eastern District of Virginia but has been appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. The case marks the first US case in which a federal court of appeals will decide whether it was objectively reasonable for a law enforcement officer to rely on a “geofence warrant” to pursue a suspect.
