ROSS Intelligence asked US appeals court to revisit AI case over Westlaw

( November 3, 2026, 20:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: ROSS Intelligence asked a US appeals court to rehear a Thomson Reuters' copyright case against it over Westlaw headnotes, saying the panel asked the wrong question on its fair-use defense. "Like authors who read books to develop their own writing style, [artificial intelligence] models train on existing material, much of it copyrighted, to generate output that looks nothing like the training material. If feeding copyrighted materials into a training universe is copyright infringement — whether or not the outputs resemble the copyrighted work — AI development will come to an abrupt halt," it argued.
