South Korea expands chief AI officer council across government agencies

( October 2, 2026, 08:53 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea has expanded the Chief AI Officer Consultative Council from 28 to 42 central government bodies, extending coordination of artificial intelligence issues beyond ministries to vice-ministerial agencies, the Presidential Council on National AI Strategy said Friday. At its first expanded meeting Friday, the council reviewed four principles for follow-up legislation after the AI Basic Act took effect early this year: keeping the act at the center of the legislative framework, filling gaps covering national defense and security, improving regulatory predictability for AI businesses and enabling swift responses to harmful outcomes. In the national AI action plan announced in February, the council recommended additional legislation and possible amendments to the AI Basic Act.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
