China warns US over alleged espionage targeting AI, chip, biotech companies

( September 14, 2026, 03:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China's Ministry of Commerce said it strongly opposes what it called expanded US espionage against Chinese companies in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and biotechnology, after CIA Deputy Director Michael Ellis reportedly described them as legitimate intelligence targets. In a statement Friday, the ministry said that intelligence-gathering against companies undermines fair competition and conflicts with US restrictions on collecting foreign commercial information to benefit American businesses. The ministry called on Washington to stop spying on Chinese companies and said China would invoke its Counter-Espionage Law and other legal measures to punish unlawful conduct and protect companies' legitimate rights and interests.Statement follows (in Chinese)....
