By Choonsik Yoo ( September 1, 2026, 05:14 GMT | Insight) -- South Korea plans to increase government funding for artificial intelligence projects by 67 percent in 2027, as it seeks to strengthen the country’s AI capabilities and help society prepare for changes from the technology’s rapid spread, according to the government’s budget proposal finalized Tuesday. The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to prioritize development of proprietary foundation AI models and applications, while the government will sharply increase funding for seven future-technology projects such as small modular reactors, nuclear fusion, quantum technology and advanced biotechnology.South Korea plans to increase government funding to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence capabilities by nearly 70 percent in 2027, while also helping society better prepare for the changes that the further spread of AI may bring, according to the government budget proposal finalized on Tuesday....
