AI systems reinforce political censorship, Meta’s Oversight Board says

( July 16, 2026, 10:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Popular AI models are reinforcing political censorship, Meta’s Oversight Board said on Thursday. Large Language Models operated by companies such as itself — and by Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google and OpenAI — can be influenced by restrictions on political criticism under certain regimes. This creates “censorship by proxy,” the board said. According to its research, when models were asked about repressive regimes, they refused to generate such content more than twice as often as when asked about regimes that are deemed more democratic. The board is calling for companies to be more transparent and to uphold human-rights standards.Report is attached....
