Authors seek to appeal US ruling that downloading from shadow libraries is fair use
( June 9, 2026, 19:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Authors suing Meta Platforms are asking US District Judge Vince Chhabria to allow an immediate appeal of his summary judgment ruling that Meta's downloading of their books from shadow libraries was fair use. The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit needs to resolve conflicting court decisions about whether downloading books from shadow libraries to train large language models violates US copyright law, they said. "This is a pivotal question of law that no court of appeals has addressed and about which there are substantial grounds for differences of opinion," writers said in a motion to certify a summary judgment ruling for interlocutory appeal.
