South Korea enhances privacy risk prevention measures under AI transformation
( May 12, 2026, 05:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator plans to inspect about 1,700 high-risk systems, including major public systems and businesses in high-risk sectors such as cloud services and system providers handling large volumes of personal data as part of efforts to prevent privacy risks. The Personal Information Protection Commission said Tuesday it is shifting the country’s privacy management framework toward preventive measures in response to AI-driven transformation. The measures come with stronger penalties for privacy violations. From September, the agency can impose fines of up to 10 percent of revenue. With the revision to the Personal Information Protection Act decree passed during the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the PIPC can apply higher revenue when determining privacy fines after comparing a company's revenue from the previous year and the average revenue of the past three years. The statement is attached (in Korean)....
