Music trade associations say Anthropic's copying not fair use in US case

( March 30, 2026, 22:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Recording Industry Association of America and other associations representing musicians urged a US federal judge to rule that Anthropic’s copying of musical works is not fair use because it generates works that substitute in the market for those it copied in training of its artificial intelligence. “Claude and other AI systems can generate lyrics for thousands of songs in the span of time that it takes a human author to write the lyrics to just one song. Those AI-generated lyrics can and do reach listeners’ ears. The substitutional harm to human-authored, copyright-protected lyrics is very real, and it is severe,” they argued in support of summary judgment. See attached brief....
