South Korea's KMCC chair outlines user protection, platform accountability agenda

( March 30, 2026, 09:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Marking his first 100 days in office, Kim Jong-cheol, chair of the Korea Media and Communications Commission, said his agency would pursue a policy agenda that includes institutional reforms to address the changing digital environment and stronger user protection and efforts to restore trust in media. He said it would respond more actively and systematically to algorithmic bias, filter bubbles, dark patterns, disinformation and digital sex-crime content, while pushing ahead with a transparency center to support fact-checking under recent amendments to South Korea's network law. Kim also said the commission would strengthen platforms’ responsibility for distributing illegal content so harmful material can be blocked more quickly, while supporting discussions on ways to address the harmful effects of excessive social media use on youths’ mental health. He added that it would advance an AI-based media sovereignty strategy through user-protection reforms, administrative innovation and budget support for AI adoption across the media industry.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
