South Korea promises stronger support for domestic AI semiconductor development

( February 12, 2026, 06:06 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources has promised to intensify support for the development and marketing of new semiconductors optimized for use by artificial intelligence systems in manufacturing. The ministry said it will push ahead in earnest from March with joint development and commercialization projects involving domestic fabless AI design companies in partnership with leading manufacturers and will invest about 1 trillion won ($695 million) over the next five years. It also promised to swiftly enact the enforcement decree of the recently approved special act on the semiconductor industry so that support measures can be implemented as efficiently as possible. In addition, the ministry plans to establish a semiconductor special account worth 2 trillion won within the year and create a dedicated investment fund for fabless companies, as provided for under the special act.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
