Law to govern AI in defense sector proposed in South Korea

( February 2, 2026, 08:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A group of 33 lawmakers from South Korea’s ruling party and largest opposition party have recently proposed a law to govern artificial intelligence specifically in the national defense sector. They said in their proposal that the law, tentatively called the Act on National Defense Artificial Intelligence and submitted on Jan. 27, aims to establish a national-level strategy for the development of defense AI and to create a legal and institutional framework for its safe and responsible use. Because the country’s AI Basic Act excludes the defense sector from its scope, there is currently no separate legal basis to systematically regulate the development, operation and safety management of defense AI technologies, they noted.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
