South Korea vows big push on fusion-energy project, with eye on AI

( January 21, 2026, 07:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT said Wednesday that the nuclear fusion research and development plan will start in earnest this year, with the aim of advancing the timeline for commercially viable fusion-power generation. The ministry said top priorities will be placed on developing a new fusion demonstration reactor model, integrating artificial intelligence technology, supporting challenging and exploratory research across diverse fusion approaches, strengthening industry–academia–research collaboration, promoting regional hub-based industrial development, and refining related institutions and strategic frameworks. To this end, the government plans to invest 112.4 billion won ($76 million) in 2026, representing a 99 percent increase from 56.4 billion won in 2025, to accelerate nuclear-fusion research and development.The statement attached (in Korean)....
