Chinese regulator plans monthlong crackdown on AI-manipulated videos

( December 31, 2025, 07:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s National Radio and Television Administration said it will launch a monthlong enforcement campaign starting Jan. 1, 2026 to curb the spread of “artificial intelligence–manipulated” videos. The effort will target AI-altered content drawn from classic Chinese literature, historical and revolutionary dramas and depictions of national heroes. Problematic videos include those that distort original themes and characters, inject graphic violence or vulgar sensationalism, promote distorted values, misappropriate or rewrite elements of Chinese culture and history or rework well-known children’s animated characters into so-called “cult” animations. Online audiovisual platforms were urged to tighten content reviews, remove unlawful material and penalize offending accounts to stem the spread of such content and foster a healthier online environment for minors.
