First enforcement of election law on AI deepfakes reported in South Korea

( December 22, 2025, 08:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s election management agency on Monday reported the first enforcement case under a law governing the use of artificial intelligence-aided deepfake videos in election affairs, since the rules were enacted in late 2023. The National Election Commission said its chapter in a small city in North Gyeongsang Province imposed fines of 5 million won ($3,400) each on two individuals for violating provisions of the Public Office Election Act governing the use of deepfake videos, which were added when the act was revised in late 2023. The commission said the two individuals violated disclosure requirements for the deepfake materials in relation to the nationwide provincial election scheduled for June 2026.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
