Australia won't get standalone AI laws, government confirms

( December 2, 2025, 00:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Australian government will maintain a light-touch approach to regulating artificial intelligence as it continues to build on the country’s “existing legal and regulatory frameworks.”  In a joint statement on Tuesday, published alongside the “National AI Plan,” Assistant Minister for Science and Technology Andrew Charlton and Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres said Australia’s plan would ensure that established laws remain the “foundation for addressing and mitigating AI-related risks.” The statement said that A$29.9 million ($19.5 million) will be used to establish the AI Safety Institute in early 2026.
