New AI safety institute to respond to risks, harms, Australian government says

In a joint statement on Tuesday, Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Andrew Charlton said the Australian AI Safety Institute, which will evaluate emerging AI capabilities, will become operational in early 2026. The statement added that the institute will provide “a dynamic, fit-for-purpose capability that is responsive to AI’s pervasiveness and rapid evolution.” In a separate statement, Australia’s Department of Industry, Science and Resources said that one of the institute’s works will include "serving as a central hub to share insights and support coordinated government action."Statements follow:...
