Perplexity AI faces copyright claims from Encyclopedia Britannica, Merriam-Webster

( September 10, 2025, 20:16 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Encyclopedia Britannica and its dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster have sued Perplexity AI in New York federal court, accusing the artificial intelligence-powered query engine of violating US copyright law in three distinct ways: first, by scraping their websites; Second, by copying their articles in response to user questions; and third, by spitting out answers that are "substantially similar" to the plaintiffs' articles. Perplexity is "cannibalizing traffic to plaintiffs’ websites with AI-generated summaries of plaintiffs’ own content," the complaint alleges.See attached file....
