South Korea adds AI-specific privacy checks to impact assessments for public institutions

( September 4, 2025, 05:35 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator has revised its privacy impact-assessment rules to introduce dedicated standards for public institutions deploying artificial intelligence systems. According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, the amendments, adopted Sept. 3 and effective Sept. 5, establish two new evaluation areas: AI training/development and AI operation/management. Criteria include verifying legal bases for data use, limiting unnecessary collection of sensitive or children’s data, setting retention and deletion rules for training data, clarifying accountability among developers and operators, providing acceptable-use policies for generative AI and creating user redress mechanisms for harmful outputs or data exposure. The regulator said the new framework aims to help agencies identify and mitigate AI-specific privacy risks, while also serving as guidance for private companies using AI to process personal data.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
