South Korea sets sharp rise in 2026 R&D funding to spur AI development

( August 22, 2025, 06:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A South Korean presidential panel on science and technology today approved the government’s plan to increase budget spending on research and development projects in artificial intelligence and other areas by 19.3 percent in 2026 to a record 35.3 trillion won ($25.35 billion), up from 29.6 trillion won in 2025. Funding for AI-related research and development will total 2.3 trillion won, a 106.1 percent increase from 2025, while spending in other sectors will also include AI-related segments — such as the development of AI-powered defense equipment. Meanwhile, the presidential office said the government will launch a national AI strategy committee and unveil the country’s AI action plan in September.The two statements, both in Korean, are attached....
